Texas Cheerleader Posts Hunting Photos On Facebook

WARNING: This post contains graphic photos of rare big-game hunting.

Kendall Jones, a 19-year-old Texas Tech cheerleader, has recently come under fire for her controversial Facebook page. It contains pictures of Jones hunting big game in Africa. She has several photos of herself posing with the animals she’s killed.

Jones claims that her hunts involved a “fair chase.” It’s worth noting that, in Africa, “hunting” lions isn’t actually much of a hunt. Especially because of safaris, lions have grown used to cars and people.

Jones, whose page had more than 89,000 likes on Tuesday, has since become the target of animal activists, and an online petition that has garnered over 80,000 signatures is asking Facebook to remove the page citing “animal cruelty.”

A Facebook spokesperson confirmed to NBC news that the social media network did recently remove some of Jones’ pictures for violating the site’s policies. But would not say exactly how many pictures were removed or provide any more specifics.

There are those who point out that according to a 2007 study published in National Geographic, “trophy hunting can play an essential role in the conservation of African wildlife.” Basically, since trophy hunters have to pay for the rights to shoot big game, there are financial incentives to maintain the land these animals live on.

What is your opinion?
