The success of the new Transformers film in China has been staggering, becoming the country’s highest-grossing film ever in a matter of days. In its first 17 days of release, the film has grossed $260 million, 50 million more than prior record holder Avatar.

To cash in on this Transformer-fever, farmers in China’s Shangdong province have been building their own Transformers from old car parts and other scrap materials. So, far, they’ve built about 100 of the robots, some as tall as 52 feet. Shopping malls and real estate companies have been the main buyers of the replicas, which cost about $16,000.
