On the night of January 22nd, the shores of Hong Kong glowed blue with wave upon wave of beautiful bioluminescent water in a phenomenon commonly known as Sea Sparkle. However, this magical display, caused by blooms of a microscopic dinoflagellate called Noctiluca scintillans, was brought on by something less-than-inspiring: environmental pollution.
Noctiluca glow when they’re disturbed, which is why the blooms are primarily visible on the shores, where they’re tossed by waves. This recent bloom was caused by agricultural runoff – fertilizers and other chemicals washed from farmland into the sea by rain. The Noctiluca that feed on these chemicals are not toxic in and of themselves, but other similar organisms are, and the ammonia they excrete as waste can help make the toxins released by other blooming microorganisms even worse.
For the time being, however, photographers willing to spend the night on some long-exposure photography are being treated to a truly special opportunity!

The reason I think marijuana should be legalized for both medicinal, recreational and industrial use is because it is far less dangerous than most other drugs available to the public. It will cut back on crime, it will create jobs, and IT WILL LITERALLY HELP PEOPLE WITH SERIOUS HEALTH PROBLEMS. It can be used to make paper, clothes and a million other things. It goes without saying that you should be careful around lions and other wild animals, but that doesn’t mean that they are un-feeling, cold-blooded killers. Frikkie Von Solms, a 69-year-old lion caretaker in Southern Africa, knows this perfectly well: he has spent the last 11 raising Zion, African lion.
Zion was born in captivity but had to be separated due to fears that his father would kill him. So he was growing up with Von Solms.
“It was a once in a lifetime experience to grow up with him and learn and live with him through all of the stages of being a lion,” Von Solms told the Daily Mail. “People talk about lions like they are just lions but they have personalities, they have humour and laugh. Zion is a gentle giant. He has never attacked humans and I trust him completely.”

The Mariana Trench is the deepest known part of Earth’s oceans. The trench is located off the coast of Japan, and stretches for almost 1,600 miles. The average depth along the trench is 6.8 miles. This might not sound like much, but the atmospheric pressure at the bottom of the trench is 1,000 stronger than the pressure at sea level.
Despite the pressure, a plethora of fish life can be found throughout the Mariana Trench. Most of them are ancient creatures who haven’t evolved for thousands of years.

This poor woman had her body damaged in a fire and her face was never the same. Thanks to some great doctors though she was able to get her face fixed and she looks better than ever. Doctors did an amazing job!
Zubaida was 9 years old. She was a member of a nomadic family that consisted of her two parents and eight other children. She and her family are from the Farah province of Afghanistan. In August of 2001, Zubaida was pouring kerosene into an indoor home cooking stove while it was hot. The fuel ignited and she caught on fire. She sustained burns to her face, neck, chest and arms.
When the fire was extinguished, her father took her to a nearby medical provider where she was given ointments. As her condition worsened, her father decided to travel to Iran for treatment. She was admitted to a hospital in Iran for 20 days and then discharged. The doctors there suggested to her father to take her home to die. Zubaida did not die, but her injuries resulted in horrible disfigurement, severe functional impairment and a crippled self-esteem.

In February, 2002, on the recommendation of local shopkeepers, Zubaida’s father, Muhammad, sought help from the Americans for his severely burned daughter. She was taken to the American Army base in Kabul. There, Zubaida met with American military doctors and they decided to contact the U.S. State Department to see what could be done. The State Department contacted Dr. Peter Grossman, a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at The Grossman Burn Center in Sherman Oaks, California. With the aid of the Children’s Burn Foundation, a Southern California based charitable organization that lends financial and social assistance to burn-injured children who have no means of getting help any other way Zubaida was brought to America for treatment at The Grossman Burn Center.
Zubaida, completed twelve major surgeries over a course of one year and within a short period of time, the transformation was astounding. She began school for the first time in her life at Round Meadow Elementary School in Calabasas, California and learned to speak English in 12 weeks. She attended psychotherapy and physical therapy, as well as, developed many wonderful friendships with her classmates at school. She had her first slumber party on her 11th birthday, March 22nd, 2003. Zubaida say’s she would like to be a pediatric doctor and help rebuild her country when she grows up.
Virtually all who came in contact with her gravitated towards her, sorrowful over her tragedy, amazed by her courage, reveling in her transformation. So many people have come together to help this one little girl and give her something that she was almost robbed of . . . her childhood. Zubaida will always be scarred but when you meet her you realize how beautiful and vibrant she is. This triumph over tragedy story of one little girls unbreakable spirit and iron will, as well as, the goodwill of mankind is truly inspirational. [via grossmanburnfoundation.org]
