Absolutely Stunning Optical Illusion Street Art

For German street artist 1010, it’s not enough to simply blow your mind with vivid colors or extreme messages. They have to lure you into gawking at their work with these incredible optical illusions. These images will have you staring at vacant buildings, completely slack jawed.

The depth that 1010 can create in their work is so impressive, it’s hard to believe that they were able to accomplish it out in the open. Heck, that sort of depth would be impressive if 1010 put that in the work they did in the comforts of an indoor studio. This street art is really something special.

What Is It Like to Walk As a Woman In New York

A public service announcement of a woman being catcalled over 100 times in TEN hours on the streets of New York has gone viral. The actress featured in the video says the video was created to heighten awareness of harassment.

Well, two minutes of catcalls over 10 hours. Still, you get the point — in America’s biggest city, a young woman is never without unwanted attention for very long.

Windowless Planes: Is This The Future of Air Travel?

The Center for Process Innovation, a British technology research company, thinks they’ve got the next big step in aviation transportation figured out. They want to remove the windows from passenger planes and replace them with OLED touch-screens that extend along the plane’s entire length and display the view from outside through cameras mounted on the plane’s exterior.

According to them, windows are one of the greatest sources of unnecessary weight in passenger planes. Solid walls are stronger and allow the walls to be built thinner as well. The OLED screens that replace the windows would display the view outside and allow passengers to select entertainment and stewardess service.

The technology does have its detractors, however – some are concerned about light pollution inside the cabin, and the panoramic view probably won’t do much to help those who are afraid of flying.

Your Brain On MDMA

MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine) is a popular party drug called Molly, and can be mixed with caffeine to make Ecstasy. It has an ability to temporarily boost mood, energy, and mental acuity through a dramatic upswing of the neurotransmitter serotonin. However, this upswing does come with some consequences as the body eliminates the excess serotonin.

While MDMA might be considered negative because it can be abused, responsible and controlled use of the chemical is being explored as a potential treatment for serious mood disorders. What does MDMA actually do to your brain?

Check out this video that explores the power of MDMA as well as the hazards that can come from long-term exposure.

Amazing Images of Prehistoric Creatures Trapped in Amber

Amber itself is formed from tree resin that, over thousands of years, fossilizes to produce first copal and then thousands or millions of years after that, amber. The sticky resin traps anything in its way, preserving it for millennia.

As it dries and hardens, the resin becomes copal, which is a greasy, clearish substance sometimes called (and is if you see it sold as amber) fake amber. Copal is a constant stage after the sticky resin that all amber goes through and can be as old as recent years to 20 million years old.

The Reasons Why People Get Their ‘Eyes Down’ Online

Around the world today, there are more than 100 million of us who like to get our ‘eyes down’ on a regular basis and play bingo online. Not a bad number of followers for a game that has been around since the 1930s, and even earlier than that in other forms. Throughout its history, bingo has always been a game that is popular to play, but since it was transformed into an online game, that popularity has shot up even remarkably.

Back in the 1990s it looked like bingo’s fortunes were going in the other direction, with fewer people able or willing to spend the time for a trip to their local bingo hall. But being able to play online offers the simple game of chance a whole new feel and profile, and there are many reasons why people enjoy playing it so much.

For a start, there’s the accessibility. If you want to play bingo at a bingo hall, you have to work around the opening hours and then factor in the time it takes you to get there and back. Playing online at one of the main bingo sites like Gala, 888bingo or Mirror Bingo, there are games going on around the clock and you can be playing within a minute or two of logging in. Just click here to play online bingo at Mirrorbingo.com to see the different bingo game schedules going on in a number of bingo rooms on the site. There’s always a game about to start somewhere on the site.

As well as the fact that you can play at any time, the great thing about online bingo is that you can also play anywhere. That’s because most of the major bingo sites have a choice of bingo games that can be played on a mobile device. So wherever you have your mobile phone or tablet, you can play bingo, as long as you have an internet connection. Some people use bingo to keep them entertained during a coffee break at work, others will play as they travel back and forth from work. Many people prefer to play on their mobile even when they’re at home, because they can sit and play on the sofa or in bed rather than have to be sitting at their desk to play on a computer.

Accessibility and mobility are both valid reasons to play online bingo, but why choose it above any number of other games that you can play online or download as an app to play on your phone? What bingo can offer that many other games can’t is a whole new vista on your social life. When you have a ticket in play, you can enter the chat rooms on the site and meet other players who are enjoying the same game as you. And while you’re there making new acquaintances, you can also join in extra chat games run by the moderator. These games are quick and easy to play and can lead to small cash prizes or entries to other bingo games on the site schedule.

While many online games are free to play, bingo isn’t exactly going to break the bank. Games cost a few pence at a time and when you sign up to a site, there’s often free playing credit to be had in the form of a welcome bonus. Depositing players can also take advantage of different promotions that the site runs. At Mirror, for example, there’s a whole page of promos that players can join in, including the Big Weekender, the last weekend of every month, where there’s a prize total of £250,000 to play for in the Red Carpet Room.

Bingo’s a game that is quick and easy to play, goes on around the clock and offers a social outlet as well as the possibility of winning big cash prizes. It’s no wonder so many people around the world choose to play it.

Shocking NASA Pictures Show Aral Sea Has Dried Up

In the 1960s, the Soviet Union undertook a major water diversion project on the arid plains of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. The region’s two major rivers, fed by snowmelt and precipitation in faraway mountains, were used to transform the desert into farms for cotton and other crops.

Before the project, the Syr Darya and the Amu Darya rivers flowed down from the mountains, cut northwest through the Kyzylkum Desert, and finally pooled together in the lowest part of the basin. The lake they made, the Aral Sea , was once the fourth largest in the world. Although irrigation made the desert bloom, it devastated the Aral Sea.

This series of images from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite documents the changes.

SEE ALSO: How Earth has changed (Google Time Lapse)

At the start of the series in 2000, the lake was already a fraction of its 1960 extent (black line). The Northern Aral Sea (sometimes called the Small Aral Sea) had separated from the Southern (Large) Aral Sea. The Southern Aral Sea had split into eastern and western lobes that remained tenuously connected at both ends.

By 2001, the southern connection had been severed, and the shallower eastern part retreated rapidly over the next several years. Especially large retreats in the eastern lobe of the Southern Sea appear to have occurred between 2005 and 2009, when drought limited and then cut off the flow of the Amu Darya. Water levels then fluctuated annually between 2009 and 2014 in alternately dry and wet years. Dry conditions in 2014 caused the Southern Sea’s eastern lobe to completely dry up for the first time in modern times.

As the lake dried up, fisheries and the communities that depended on them collapsed. The increasingly salty water became polluted with fertilizer and pesticides. The blowing dust from the exposed lakebed, contaminated with agricultural chemicals, became a public health hazard. The salty dust blew off the lakebed and settled onto fields, degrading the soil. Croplands had to be flushed with larger and larger volumes of river water. The loss of the moderating influence of such a large body of water made winters colder and summers hotter and drier.

In a last-ditch effort to save some of the lake, Kazakhstan built a dam between the northern and southern parts of the Aral Sea. Completed in 2005, the dam was basically a death sentence for the southern Aral Sea, which was judged to be beyond saving. All of the water flowing into the desert basin from the Syr Darya now stays in the Northern Aral Sea. Between 2005 and 2006, the water levels in that part of the lake rebounded significantly and very small increases are visible throughout the rest of the time period. The differences in water color are due to changes in sediment.

Awesome Conversation Pits

A conversation pit is an architectural features that incorporates built-in seating into a depressed section of flooring within a larger room. It is sometimes referred to as a ‘sunken living room’ and was a popular design style from the 1950s to 1970s across Europe and North America. [source]

Modernist architects Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard used a conversation pit as the centerpiece of the influential Miller House (1958) in Columbus, Indiana, one of the earliest widely publicized applications of the concept. A brilliant red conversation pit (since covered, but recently restored) was later incorporated by Saarinen into the 1962 TWA Flight Center at JFK Airport in New York. [source]

Stunning Pictures Of Family Who Lived With A Real Lion Back In 1971

After a trip to Africa, actress Tippi Hedren, Melanie Griffith’s mother and her husband Noel Marshall wanted to make a movie about lions. At the advice of Ron Oxley, an animal trainer who said that “to get to know about lions, you’ve got to live with them for a while,” they had Neil the lion live with them.

Their life was documented by LIFE photographer Michael Rougier.

Their life with Neil seems to have been nice, but their movie, Roar, didn’t go quite so well. Melanie required 50 stitches after being attacked by a lioness that was part of the film, and cinematographer Jan de Bont had to have his scalp sewn back on. 70 people wound up being injured by the movie’s cast of 150 large predatory cats. The movie cost more than 17.5 million and made 2 million.

Climate Change Is Affecting Earth’s Gravity!

Although not designed to map changes in Earth’s gravity over time, ESA’s extraordinary satellite has shown that the ice lost from West Antarctica over the last few years has left its signature.

More than doubling its planned life in orbit, GOCE spent four years measuring Earth’s gravity in unprecedented detail.

Scientists are now armed with the most accurate gravity model ever produced. This is leading to a much better understanding of many facets of our planet – from the boundary between Earth’s crust and upper mantle to the density of the upper atmosphere.

The strength of gravity at Earth’s surface varies subtly from place to place owing to factors such as the planet’s rotation and the position of mountains and ocean trenches.

Changes in the mass of large ice sheets can also cause small local variations in gravity.

Recently, the high-resolution measurements from GOCE over Antarctica between November 2009 and June 2012 have been analysed by scientists from the German Geodetic Research Institute, Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, the Jet Propulsion Lab in USA and the Technical University of Munich in Germany.

Remarkably, they found that the decrease in the mass of ice during this period was mirrored in GOCE’s measurements, even though the mission was not designed to detect changes over time.

Using gravity data to assess changes in ice mass is not new. The NASA–German Grace satellite, which was designed to measure change, has been providing this information for over 10 years.

However, measurements from Grace are much coarser than those of GOCE, so they cannot be used to look at features such as Antarctica’s smaller ‘catchment basins’.

For scientific purposes, the Antarctic ice sheet is often divided into catchment basins so that comparative measurements can be taken to work out how the ice in each basin is changing and discharging ice to the oceans. Some basins are much bigger than others.

Antarctic ice-sheet change Copyright Helm et al., The Cryosphere, 2014

By combining GOCE’s high-resolution measurements with information from Grace, scientists can now look at changes in ice mass in small glacial systems – offering even greater insight into the dynamics of Antarctica’s different basins.

They have found that the loss of ice from West Antarctica between 2009 and 2012 caused a dip in the gravity field over the region.

In addition, GOCE data could be used to help validate satellite altimetry measurements for an even clearer understanding of ice-sheet and sea-level change.

ESA’s CryoSat satellite, which carries a radar altimeter, has recently shown that since 2009 the rate at which ice is been lost from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet every year has increased by a factor of three.

And, between 2011 and 2014, Antarctica as a whole has been shrinking in volume by 125 cubic kilometres a year.

Johannes Bouman from the German Geodetic Research Institute said, “We are now working in an interdisciplinary team to extend the analysis of GOCE’s data to all of Antarctica.

“This will help us gain further comparison with results from CryoSat for an even more reliable picture of actual changes in ice mass.”

This new research into GOCE’s gravity data revealing ice loss over time is being carried out through ESA’s Earth Observation Support to Science Element.

Cool Shapeshifting Metal

Researchers at NC State have developed a new method to control the interfacial energy of a liquid metal via electrochemical deposition (or removal) of an oxide layer on its surface using ~1 volt.

SEE ALSO: 7 talks to make you love science

Liquid metals have very large surface tension and therefore typically adopt a spherical shape. Surfactants, like soap, can lower the interfacial tension between two dissimilar liquids (for example, water and oil), but have negligible impact on the large interfacial tensions of liquid metal. Unlike conventional surfactants, the approach here can tune the interfacial tension of a metal significantly (from ~7x that of water to near zero), rapidly, and reversibly using only modest voltages. These properties can be harnessed to induce new electrohydrodynamic phenomena for manipulating liquid metal alloys based on gallium, which may enable shape-reconfigurable metallic components in electronic, electromagnetic, and microfluidic devices without the use of toxic mercury. The results also suggest that oxides—which are ubiquitous on most metals and semiconductors—may be harnessed to lower interfacial energy between dissimilar materials.

Scientists Make An Invisibility Cloak. How Does This Work?

Researchers at the University of Rochester inspired perhaps by Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak, developed several ways—some simple and some involving new technologies—to hide objects from view.

The latest effort, developed at the University of Rochester, not only overcomes some of the limitations of previous devices, but it uses inexpensive, readily available materials in a novel configuration.

John Howell, a professor of physics at the University of Rochester, said:

“There’ve been many high tech approaches to cloaking and the basic idea behind these is to take light and have it pass around something as if it isn’t there, often using high-tech or exotic materials.”

Forgoing the specialized components, Howell and graduate student Joseph Choi developed a combination of four standard lenses that keeps the object hidden as the viewer moves up to several degrees away from the optimal viewing position.

Scientists-make-an-invisibility-cloak-2-640x360

“This is the first device that we know of that can do three-dimensional, continuously multidirectional cloaking, which works for transmitting rays in the visible spectrum,” said Choi, a PhD student at Rochester’s Institute of Optics.

“We use random on-off patterns to gain a small amount of position information while only minimally affecting the momentum of the photons”, explains Howell. “In much the same way as weak measurements, the random on-off patterns gain very little information about the position of the photons, but putting all the patterns together, we can learn about the images carried by the light.”

How exactly does it work? D-News explains:

Beutifuly Situated Mountain Hut Where You Can Stay For Free

This mountain-top hut with a sweeping panoramic view of the Julian Alps in Italy is free to stay for anyone who knocks on its door. The catch? You’ll have to hike 8,300ft up Foronon del Buinz Mountain to get to it.

ommissioned by the family of the late mountain climber Luca Vuerich, who died in an avalanche in 2010, this unusual prefab wood cabin by architect Giovanni Pesamosca is located on the Ceria-Merlone trail and has been offering a safe refuge for hiking nature lovers since it opened in September 2012. The clever chapel-like design prevents snow from piling up on it, and its south-facing opening lets the sun melt any snow that builds up during winter.

Due to the high altitude, the building materials for the hut were flown in by helicopter over 18 trips. A team of 12 professional workers, mountain rescue volunteers and Luca’s friends then put the 16-sqm structure together in a single day.

For the less adventurous, there’s a vast network of similar huts scattered throughout the Alps at much lower altitudes, though you may have to pay to stay. Some even come with staff on duty in the summer who can cook and clean the place for hikers.

Breaking News! Ebola Confirmed First Case USA Texas

The Ebola virus infecting and killing people in West Africa is the worst recorded outbreak, according to the World Health Organization. This is no longer just a threat to African countries. Cases of infection have been found in Europe, and now in the USA.

The first case of Ebola in a patient diagnosed in a U.S. hospital was confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Tuesday.

Ebola is a viral illness of which the initial symptoms can include a sudden fever, intense weakness, muscle pain and a sore throat, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). And that is just the beginning: subsequent stages are vomiting, diarrhoea and – in some cases – both internal and external bleeding.

According to BBC, disease infects humans through close contact with infected animals and then spreads between humans by direct contact with infected blood and bodily fluids, or indirectly through contact with contaminated environments.
