Most Beautiful Geysers In Iceland

Geysers are found in active volcanic areas or land that is prone to earthquakes. Thermal or hot springs are also a feature, as are boiling mud pools, often appreciated for their medicinal qualities.

Watching a geyser erupt, even a small one, is a fascinating sight. The powerhouse of a geyser lies deep underground, where surface water seeps through fissures and collects in caverns. The temperature of the surrounding volcanic rock, at around 200 °C, heats the trapped water, causing it to expand into steam and force its way up and out.

Here is some of most stunning Icelandic geysers.

The Lord of the Rings Mythology Explained

Tolkien’s great mythological tales of Middle-earth are meant to be taken, fictitiously, as an ancient history of theEarth, particularly of Europe, from several thousand years before the modern era. The world Middle-earth is actually supposed to be a fictional period in our Earth’s own past 6,000 to 7,000 years ago. Tolkien’s legendarium is often called “Middle-earth mythology”.

But let’s be honest, sorting the men from the elves and the Balrogs from the orcs can be confusing. Thankfully, if you have four minutes to spare we can get it all straightened out.

BBC News Reporter Inhales Burning Drugs And Can't Finish Report

Quentin Sommerville, the corporation’s Middle East correspondent, posted a link to the video on his YouTube page today as a ‘Christmas present’ to his Twitter followers. The video, which he called ‘Don’t inhale’, shows the reporter stood next to a huge pile of heroin, opium and hashish, but as he tries to begin his report he can’t help but giggle.

Photos of Rice Fields That Look Like Broken Glass

Rice is a staple of half of the world’s population. Rice technically doesn’t have to be flooded, but it does require a lot of water to grow, and flooding it makes it harder for weeds to take root and for vermin to eat the precious grains. The flooded rice paddies that stretch across the Far East are stunningly beautiful.

System of the rice terraces demonstrates extraordinary harmony between people and their environment, both visually and ecologically, based on exceptional and long-standing social and religious structures.

Cars of Cuba

When Fidel Castro came to power in 1959, he made it illegal for anyone to import cars without government permission. In 1962 a United States embargo against Cuba was introduced, effectively cutting trade between the two countries. This meant that the cars in Cuba could no longer receive new replacement parts when something broke. Currently, the only way to keep these cars on the road today is by using Cuban ingenuity to adapt household products and Soviet technology into these vehicles.

Now, with the easing of relations between the U.S. and Cuba, some of the nearly 60,000 vintage cars in Cuba called Yank tank or máquina could eventually make their way into collectors’ hands stateside.

New Record For The World's Deepest Fish Filmed In The Mariana Trench

Scientists at the University of Aberdeen have set a new record for the world’s deepest fish, filmed in the Mariana Trench – the deepest place on Earth.

The new finding was just one of several new species discovered, as well as the first footage of the mysterious ‘supergiant’ amphipod filmed alive. The footage was recorded using the UK’s deepest diving vehicle – the Hadal-Lander – a vehicle designed and built entirely in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Stunning View Of Grand Canyon Filled with Clouds

For the second year in a row, a rare phenomenon called a ‘temperature inversion’ filled the Grand Canyon with clouds.

The weather occurrence is said to only happen roughly once every 10 years, yet it has happened twice in the span of a year; first occurring on 29 November 2013 and again on 11 December 2014.

See last year’s photos

A “temperature/cloud inversion” occurs when warm air acts as a lid to seal cool air near the ground, trapping fog in the canyon and preventing it from rising. According to the National Weather Service, the atmosphere’s temperature profile is most prone to inversion during the winter, when long nights allow for air near the Earth’s surface to become unusually cold. Also assisting is the Canyon’s natural topographical features, enhancing the effects of the inversion. [via]

1000-Piece CMYK Color Gamut Puzzle By Clemens Habicht

You’d think that everything that could be done with jigsaw puzzles has already been done, but artist and designer Clemens Habicht proves you are wrong. His 1000 colours puzzle follows a CMYK color gamut (method by which printers achieve their colors). Though some of the colors are nearly imperceptibly different from each other.

Habicht says the puzzle is actually easier than assembling a specific image; “Unlike ordinary puzzles where you are in effect redrawing a specific picture from a reference, you have a sense of where ever piece belongs compared to ever other piece. There is a real logic in the doing that is weirdly soothing, therapeutic.

Amazing Cloak Experiment

This is a really simple yet amazing project. It uses 4 lenses to control light in such a way that it renders an object invisible.

When the light enters the first lens, it flips the image upside down. The second lens sends the light straight into the 3rd lens. The 3rd lens focuses the light into a point about 3 inches past the lens. Since the light is focused into a point, any object placed around that point cannot be seen when looking through the lenses. The light is essentially bending around the object. Once the light hits the point just past the 3rd lens, it then flips back right side up. This allows the background image to pass through all of the lenses without warping or being seen as upside down.

The most dangerous drugs in the world.

In a recent study published in The Lancet, tobacco and alcohol ranked among the top ten most dangerous drugs in the world that are currently being used today. This is quite a surprise when you contemplate that they are considered more dangerous than the likes of ecstasy and heroin.

For this study, twenty different drugs were put under the microscope, some of which included cocaine, amphetamines and LSD, and the following three factors were taken into consideration in order to rank them:

1. How addictive the drug was

2. Physical harm to the user of the drug

3. The impact the drug has on society in general

However, in most studies carried out, alcohol and tobacco don’t feature as much in the top ten, so this article will give a quick insight into a rounded up version of what’s considered to be the nine most dangerous drugs in the world.

9. Bath Salts

Bath Salts” are a designer drug – meaning that they are “cooked” in a laboratory. It’s sometimes referred to as “bath powder” on the streets. The drug causes paranoid delusional psychosis as well as strong hallucinations. Delusional thinking is carried out by violent means by users in the majority of cases.

8. Benzodiazepines

This Drugs’ Damage to the Body comes in the form of severe depression, dependency, and slurred speech. As the drug is used to treat cases of depression, it can become extremely dangerous if it’s used in excess. The drug’s action on the human body is known with a high level of certainty, so experts are able to ascertain its effects quite accurately.

7. Crystal Meth

Crystal Meth is a strong stimulant that is beneficial only when used for the correct treatment. Only when it’s used for “fun” purposes does it cause life-threatening issues to the user. ADHD, dizziness, restlessness and visual impairment are just some of the big effects of Crystal Meth.

6. Ketamine

This is a powerful hallucinogen that causes severe cases of paranoia. Its effects on the human body include visual and auditory hallucinations, anaesthesia and blood pressure issues.

5. Methdone (Street version)

Methdone is considered a form of an opiate drug. Users can easily overdose on Methdone, which can lead to Hepatitis, pneumonia and various respiratory/psychological conditions – even death.

4. Cocaine

This famous drug is known all around the world and is a slow killer. Its effects on the nervous system and the brain are extremely dangerous when used in the wrong way. From this list, cocaine is probably the most widely used drug of them all.

3. Opiates

There are various street names for Opiates ranging from Darvocet, Heroin, Morphine, Percodan and Talwin. Most prescription drugs can be labelled as Opiates. Because Morphine has such an addictive nature, it can only be administered legally in hospitals. Probably the most common Opiate drug is Heroin, which is a highly concentrated form of Morphine. They say that you become addicted to Heroin the moment you use it – it’s that addictive.

2. LSD

With a big enough dose, users will experience hallucinations and delusions. These “trips” can last for up to twelve hours with psychological effects that are unpredictable. Increased core temperatures, blood pressure and heart rate are all common symptoms of LSD.

1. Scopolamine

Without doubt the most dangerous drug in the world today is Scopolamine aka “The Devil’s Breath”. This drug will eliminate free will and erase all memory of the unfortunate individual that comes into contact with it. Scopolamine is derived from a flower extract that is found only in South America – predominately in Colombia.

Due to the fact that it’s odourless and tasteless, it’s extremely lethal and can be quickly administered to a person without them even knowing it.

scopolamine

These nine drugs that are listed are effectively destroying the lives of millions and millions of people every minute of every day. Some are obviously more dangerous than others in the short-term, but in the long-term they’re all deadly killers.

Satiric Illustrations Of Today’s Problems Drawn In The Vintage Style

John Holcrofts style is based on the 50’s advertisements and “bad print” characteristic texture that completes the effect. Nonetheless, the content of these illustrations is anything but old-fashioned – social issues and people’s behavior are drawn in a satiric way. Our dependence on technology, society’s greed or devaluation of workers are some of the issues Holcroft likes to show.

If you’re still not in the holiday spirit, this might just be the thing that can get you there.

Redditor zeezromnomnom and their wife have created what should undoubtedly be the next big Christmas tradition. Not only does it make for some serious Christmas cheer, it’s super easy to do as well.

All you need is a Santa hat and a TV screen, though I’m sure it would be just as fun on a laptop screen or that of any other media-playing device.

Welcome To Hell On Earth

The Door to Hell is a natural gas field in Derweze (also spelled Darvaze, meaning “gate”), Ahal Province, Turkmenistan. It is a crater made by geologists. The Door to Hell is noted for its natural gas fire which has been burning continuously since it was lit by Soviet petrochemical scientists in 1971.

The fire is fed by the rich natural gas deposits in the area. The pungent smell of burning sulfur pervades the area for some distance.

Powerful Billboard Against Child Abuse Takes On A New Meaning When You Step In Front Of It

Saving innocent kids from child abuse should be a priority of everyone in society. Children are innocents who need our guidance and protection, not abuse. To remind us of this horrors of child abuse, an incredibly powerful sign recently went up in South Korea that will shock viewers into action.

The sign displays an abusive father threatening his younger son. It is lit so that pedestrians can walk and cast their shadow on it. When a shadow appears, people are given the chance to help save the child’s life and symbolically intervene. This helps raise awareness of the issue and our power to prevent it.

This Illusion Will Broke Your Brain

Brusspup, which is undoubtedly the best YouTube channel for all sorts of sciencey tricks and illusions, recently released this video that uses four lenses that bend light in a way to make objects appear invisible.

I’m not sure how it works, for me that it’s all magic.

But apparently there is a perfectly “simple” explanation:

Let's Put Our Solar System Into Perspective

This amazing graphic was created by Roberto Ziche and shows our solar system to scale.

Roberto explains: At the Chabot Space and Science Center there were some old, poor quality images, probably downloaded from internet and printed on office paper, showing the Sun and the planets to scale. I found the images content to be extremely interesting, but the design and quality was definitely something that could have been improved. I decided to give it a try, and create a brand new, more artistic view of our solar system, poster size (36″ x 36″), and donate it to the Center to replace those old prints.

The 3D geometry was not too complex, but there was a lot of lighting experimentation to get the scene illuminated only by the Sun itself, and some time consuming multi-layer composition in Photoshop.”

The amount of ‘space’ between objects can also boggle the mind. For example, did you know you can fit all of the planets in our solar system in the space between Earth and our moon?

Lastly, check out the video below to see a comparison of our Sun compared to other large stars we have discovered.

Drone Captured Post-Apocalyptic Footage From Chernobyl

Chernobyl is one of the most interesting and dangerous places on earth. The nuclear disaster, which happened in 1986 had an effect on many people in Europe. It caused so much distress hundreds of miles away, so I can’t imagine how terrifying it would have been for the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian citizens who were forced to evacuate.

UK-based filmmaker Danny Cooke, armed with a camera and a radiation dosimeter, spent a week exploring Chernobyl and the nearby abandoned city of Pripyat in a way we haven’t seen before – using an airborne video drone. His breathtaking video, called “Postcards From Pripyat,” exposes the sheer scale of this ghostly post-apocalyptic landscape.

Cooke visited Pripyat, Ukraine earlier this year while working on a CBS documentary about the radioactive disaster site. The Chernobyl catastrophe in 1986 caused the biggest radioactive release ever, comparable to 200-300 atomic bombs. To this day, the site of the accident is surrounded by an utterly abandoned exclusion area of 1,000 square miles.

There was something serene, yet highly disturbing about this place. Time has stood still and there are memories of past happenings floating around us”- says Cooke.

This Pictures Will Show You Why Norway Should Be Your Next Travel Destination

Norway is a geographical rarity because its length from north to south gives it one of the greatest varieties of environments in a single country in Europe – from deciduous forests to arctic tundras. It should be a far colder and icier country than it is, but its temperatures are somewhat regulated by the relatively warm North Atlantic and Norwegian currents.

Nonetheless, its coasts are slashed by fjords that were carved by massive glaciers and ice sheets during the last ice age, giving its rugged northern coasts even more majestic charm.

Company Craetes Touchable Memories To Help The Blind See Their Photos Using 3D Printing

3D printers have now become a common technological advancement that has assisted people medically on many levels — from 3D-printing organs to creating prosthetics and medical implants. Now, a company called Pirate3D has developed a 3D printer that can be used to assist people with eyesight problems.

As they explained on their website:

Who hasn’t dreamt of reliving a moment in time? Touchable Memories is a social experiment created by the agency LOLA [that tells] the story of five people from different parts of the world, Gabor, Mario, Meritxell, Yassine and Daniela, who have become visually impaired over time. Each of them has a vivid memory of a special moment that was captured in a photograph that has since faded in their memories.

The Creepy Story of How Budapest Became a "City of Smiles" in the 1930s

A tragic suicide epidemic gripped Budapest, Hungary in the wake of World War I — and some believed it was all caused by a popular song. Even weirder than this idea, though, was how the city tried to combat the suicide problem with a “Smile Club.”

On 17th October, 1937, the Sunday Times Perth explained the Budapest suicide problem:

‘Although a magnet for tourists from all over the world, Budapest has for several years been known to its own people as The City of Suicides. Budapest suffered badly after the war and has received unpleasant publicity from the number of cases of self-destruction occurring every year within its boundaries. Some of them are alleged to have been inspired by the Budapest song, “Gloomy Sunday”, but be that as it may, the suicide rate in Budapest is definitely high. The favorite method adopted by most Budapest melancholics in drowning, and patrol boats are stationed along the boundary near the bridges to rescue citizens who seek consolation in the dark waters of the Danube.’

The paper added that people in Budapest were combatting the problem by learning to smile better:

‘Now, however, a “Smile Club” has been inaugurated to counteract the suicide craze it was originally begun more as a joke by Professor Jeno and a hypnotist named Binczo, but somehow it caught on. The organisers have now a regular school and guarantee to teach the Roosevelt smile, the Mona Liza smile, the Clark Gable smile, the Dick Powell smile, the Loretta Young Smile, and various other types, the rates varying according to the difficulties encountered. Jeno says the methods employed at his school, aided by better business conditions in Budapest are making smiling popular and before long it is hoped that the name of Budapest will be changed to the City of Smiles.’

The song Gloomy Sunday (also known as the Hungarian Suicide Song), mentioned above, was composed by Rezső Seress and published in 1933. It became well-known after Billie Holiday covered it eight years later. There have been several urban legends regarding Gloomy Sunday, because the number of Hungarian suicides peaked in the 1930s and press reports linked them to the song. There were also stories about radio networks banning the song, but only BBC did it with the Billie Holiday version in 1941, which was “detrimental to wartime morale.”

Here is the original version:

Flying can be the worst. Not only do you get searched just to get on the plane, but you pay an arm and a leg in the terminal. But it didn’t use to be this way. In fact, during the 1960s and ’70s in Golden Age of air travel, there was more space, classier interiors and bolder designs.

Here are some of the actual cabin interiors for the Boeing 747s in the 1970s. They are awesome.
