Why Neutrinos Matter

Elementary particles are the smallest known building blocks in the universe—and the neutrino is one of the smallest of the small. These tiny neutrinos can tell us about the furthest reaches and most extreme environments of the universe … but only if we can catch them.

SĂlvia Bravo Gallart details how the IceCube telescope in Antarctica is working to do just that.

Whether it’s because you are an unlikable curmudgeon, suffer from nauseating halitosis, or some other reason, your Instagram followers don’t have to know that nobody wants anything to do with you thanks to the Selfie Arm.

Artists Aric Snee and Justin Crowe created the selfie stick disguised as a fiberglass, lifelike arm as a commentary on “the constant, gnawing need for narcissistic internet validation.” Sounds good!

Ways To Develop Your Brain Using The World Wide Web

The internet is great, isn’t it? There’s nothing we can’t do from the click of a button. We can do our shopping, socialise with friends, keep up with our banking, and of course look at grumpy cats. It’s become an integral part of our lives, to the point where in some countries it’s now a basic human right.

Google is now our go-to place to find information, and there’s no doubt it has made us a brighter nation. But whilst it’s great for knowledge, it’s also an amazing tool for training the brain.

Brain training has been a buzzword for a few years now, with the Nintendo DS playing a big part in that, but today it’s still as popular as ever. Meditation is most certainly on the rise, but there are also hundreds of sites and apps to flex our brains in the world’s biggest metaphorical gym, strengthening the most important muscle of all.

We take a look at the best places online to improve your brain skills, and have a little bit of fun along with it.

 Lumosity

1

Lumosity has been training brains for over seven years now and has attracted over 70 million users during that time.

Created by Kunal Sarkar, Michael Scanlon, and David Drescher, the site has become world renowned for its program which consists of games that focus on areas such as memory, attention, flexibility, and problem solving.

With over 40 games to choose from it allows users to target a wide range of cognitive skills in order to work on areas where they aren’t necessarily strong on, and log all their results.

According to the site, playing the games just a few minutes a day will make you smarter, sharper, and brighter, with games including simple snap games, directing trains to stations, and remembering patterns.

Natural Born Poker Player

2

But that isn’t the only site which uses games to test your brain. PokerStars’ Natural Born Poker Player uses augmented reality to prompt the user to make quick and correct decisions.

So far the poker brand, which has over 50 million members, has released three games named The Khazi, The Chase, and The Poisoner, all with the aim of testing the same sort of skills required whilst sat at the poker table.

The Chase is perhaps the most exciting of all, testing your quick thinking, cool headedness, and bravery – a key skill when sitting on the green felt. In it, you must chase a mugger who has stolen a woman’s handbag, making quick decisions to keep up with him and take that handbag back.

The other games are slightly more fun and involve a difficult restroom situation and poisoning an ambassador at a masquerade ball.

What makes it stand out over other brain training games however is the fact that it’s augmented reality, transporting you straight into the situation, making your brain work harder and harder to make the decisions.

Online Poker

3 (1)

And online poker isn’t the worst way to sharpen your brain either. The game requires large amounts of concentration, as well as quick thinking to analyse whether an opponent is bluffing or not.

The game has been played online for around 20 years now, but never has it been as big as it is today. Hundreds of millions of people play the game online now, in an industry worth billions, and catering to players of all abilities.

For those looking to boost their brains, playing with play money is perfect. You’ll encounter all types of players from sharks to maniacs, and being sharp enough to beat them and take a prize pot takes an awful lot of brain power.

Particularly with long sessions, it is a great way to improve concentration, and you never know; you could get good enough to become a real player.

 Khan Academy

4

The Khan Academy opened in 2006 and aimed to do something quite phenomenal. Founded by Salman Khan, he set about trying to provide a “free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere.”

And people have certainly taken him up on that offer. In a little under a decade the Khan Academy has uploaded thousands of videos to YouTube with some earning millions of views, all giving delightful insight into a range of subjects.

That’s complimented on their website where they have thousands of resources translated into a range of other languages including French, German, Indonesian, Arabic, and many more.

Math, science, and economics all can be studied, meaning you’re never too old to get back to school and finally get your head around algebra.

Neuronation

5

Similar to Lumosity, Neuronation is like a huge gym for the brain, ready for you to start showing off those muscles. However, there is a little bit of a twist. Not only does the site help in everyday brain exercises but the company also works hard to produce games and activities to help with rehabilitation.

Over the years they’ve co-operated with numerous companies to investigate how training can help assist stroke victims along with the importance of brain activity in old age and have found it really can make a difference.

The games themselves challenge memory, logic, attention, and verbal skills through activities based on this research and offer tailored challenges to suit your needs. Like Lumosity, you can record all your results, setting goals and targets to keep challenging your brain further and further.

6

It’s generally accepted that exercise is good for us. We’re encouraged to take part in sports, running, and head down to the gym to pump some iron to keep us strong in our later years. An active body will make you live longer. It seems to be that simple. But we shouldn’t forget the brain; after all, it’s the most important muscle of all.

So what are you waiting for? It’s time to get the sweatbands on and get started on making that brain stronger…

Heartbreaking Photos Of Pollution To Inspire You To Recycle

In many Western countries, each person generates 4.3lb (1.95kg) of waste every day, up from 2.7 (1.2kg) in 1960. There are now 7.3 billion people in the world; with the current population growth rate of 1.1%, this means that in roughly 64 years, the Earth’s population will be almost 15 billion.

Light pollution is a threat to your health. This is serious! This can be thought of as second hand smoke in the 1970′s. Researchers were just starting to look into the effects of second hand smoke back then. Many people laughed at the idea that one person could smoke.. and another person could be harmed. Today, we know that this is in fact the case.

Amazing Clouds That Look Like Other Things

Clouds are an interesting visual phenomena and can form some very weird shapes.

Regardless of the shape and the looks of the cloud, they’re all made of the same thing – condensed water or ice. When the sun heats the ground, warm air starts to evaporate and rise towards the sky. Once these water vapor particles cluster together, a cloud is formed. Otherwise the cloud simply evaporates into the thin air.

Our tendency to see faces or images in random objects is called pareidolia. Renowned astrophysicist Carl Sagan theorized that this hard-wired tendency evolved as a way to quickly identify faces at a split-second (even in poor visibility), allowing us to identify them and judge their emotional state in the blink of an eye.

The Evolving Landscape of Online Payment Options

The world ‘freemium’ is a popular one in the contemporary business world, with multiple sectors utilising this business model to captivate and engage customers. This model works quite simply, by offering customer access to free content or tools as part of a basic subscription, before offering tiered packages and future purchasing options that help to add layers to the experience.

The primary advantage of this is that it affords customers choice, and creates the illusion of freedom and flexibility in terms of how they spend their money. Above all else, they can tailor their experience across a host of markets simply by choosing which tiered packages are selected for purchase.

From Credit Cards to E-Wallets: An evolution of Choice

The benefits of this aside, however, the evolution of this business model and real-time, electronic payments has been pronounced and rapid in recent times. It all began with the option of leaving credit card details on https pages online, using a desktop computer and a real-time Internet connection. Over time, websites have sought to refine this process while also tightening security, creating 128-bit security encryptions that offer secure payments from all leading credit and debit card service providers.

This technological advancement has also created additional payment options, however, with two primary examples. The first is the development of mobile technology and payments, through which consumers can purchase goods offline simply by using their smartphone interface. The second is the evolution of e-wallet payment solutions such as PayPal, which enables individuals to execute secure and instantaneous payments from a host of handheld and desktop devices. This has had a particularly pronounced impact in the online and mobile gaming market, where leading brands such as Titanbet Casino offer flexible payments solutions like Paypal that drive real-time, in game purchasing.

The Last Word

Let’s say that you were planning on playing a game of live roulette, for example. You would not be required to pay a subscription fee to the site, and in fact you would most likely be rewarded with a welcome package and generous, first deposit match bonus. You would be required to register your payment details or a viable, e-wallet payment solution, however, through which you could make an initial deposit and also execute future withdrawals. This is a prime example of the flexibility on offer, as you have the option of listing one or multiple payment provides from card issuers such as Visa or Maestro to e-wallet solutions like Skrill, Neteller and of course PayPal.

There are alternative options that have also entered the marketplace in recent times, including the entropay wallet system (which is a common feature among online casinos). There is also an option known as the Diners Club International card, which offers interest free credit on online purchases across a range of websites. It is also interesting to note that an even wider range of resources and websites are now accepting online payments, from Google’s Mobile Play app to the PlayStation store. This not only underlines the enhanced security and flexibility provided by e-wallet payment solutions, but also the increasingly prominent nature of real-time mobile shopping.

The Best Video Game Soundtracks Of All Time

We love a good soundtrack. It boosts a product considerably. If it wasn’t for Cliff Martinez, College, and Electric Youth, Drive would probably be only half the film it is. A soundtrack can make something effortlessly cool, with songs becoming synonymous with them. Look at The Graduate. Mrs Robinson, The Sound of Silence, and Scarborough Fair all remind us of the Dustin Hoffman classic.

And the same applies to gaming. Music has become a major part of it, from online gaming to console gaming, whether it be ambient music or entirely important to the story.

It takes us closer to everyday life. The sounds in Royal Vegas latest mobile casino for smartwatches will make you feel like you’re sat in the Caesar Palace casino, immersed in the experience that little bit more. Whilst in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City you’ll hear the hits of the Human League and Kool & the Gang taking you back to 1980s Miami.

But what are the best soundtracks? We take a look at three of the best scores in the growing world of gaming

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

2

Of course we have to start with Vice City. Put the car radio on and you’ll be blasted with a host of 80s classics, with sing alongs, head boppers, and plenty to get your groove on. You almost forget about the missions and just want to cruise.

Toto’s Africa is your token power ballad, whilst Billie Jean, Two Tribes, and Spandau Ballet’s Gold all add a bit of variety to your drive. In fact there are over 100 80s classics for you to skip through.

Streets Of Rage 2

3

Taking a step back from modern day gaming and into the 90s when the Sega Mega Drive ruled the roost, Streets of Rage 2 inspired a whole new generation of soundtracks. Scored by Yuzo Koshiro, it brought techno to the world of street fighting, and indeed the console itself.

Pushing boundaries with the consoles capabilities, its futuristic sound bizarrely still holds up to this day, and of course we’re going to leave you with a little taste…

Max Payne 3
4

Another scoring masterpiece put together by Rockstar games (the creators of GTA), Max Payne 3 features incredible drum beats and synth effects which drew critical acclaim.

Composed by LA band HEALTH, the tunes added a dark and tense sound to reflect the mentality of the lead character, adding so much to the game itself, and just like Drive shows the importance of music in entertainment. It’s most certainly the best original soundtrack to a game for some time, with Tears being a clear standout. It’ll take an awful lot to be beaten…

Holograms for Freedom: Thousands Join Virtual Demo Against New Protest Law in Spain

Protesters in Spain have come up with a novel way of taking on a new law that limits the rights of the public to take part in demonstrations. There was a large turnout, but nobody even came close to being arrested – because no one actually attended the protest.

A number of holograms were projected outside Spanish parliament building, showing people across the globe, who are angry at the new so-called ‘safety’ law, which makes it illegal to protest outside government buildings, insult police officers or refuse to reveal identification documents.

For The First Time Dark Matter May Have Been Observed

For the first time dark matter may have been observed interacting with other dark matter in a way other than through the force of gravity.

Observations of colliding galaxies made with ESO’s Very Large Telescope and the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope have picked up the first intriguing hints about the nature of this mysterious component of the Universe.

Using the MUSE instrument on ESO’s VLT in Chile, along with images from Hubble in orbit, a team of astronomers studied the simultaneous collision of four galaxies in the galaxy cluster Abell 3827. The team could trace out where the mass lies within the system and compare the distribution of the dark matter with the positions of the luminous galaxies.

Although dark matter cannot be seen, the team could deduce its location using a technique called gravitational lensing. The collision happened to take place directly in front of a much more distant, unrelated source. The mass of dark matter around the colliding galaxies severely distorted spacetime, deviating the path of light rays coming from the distant background galaxy — and distorting its image into characteristic arc shapes.

Our current understanding is that all galaxies exist inside clumps of dark matter. Without the constraining effect of dark matter’s gravity, galaxies like the Milky Way would fling themselves apart as they rotate. In order to prevent this, 85 percent of the Universe’s mass must exist as dark matter, and yet its true nature remains a mystery.

In this study, the researchers observed the four colliding galaxies and found that one dark matter clump appeared to be lagging behind the galaxy it surrounds. The dark matter is currently 5000 light-years (50 000 million million kilometres) behind the galaxy — it would take NASA’s Voyager spacecraft 90 million years to travel that far.

A lag between dark matter and its associated galaxy is predicted during collisions if dark matter interacts with itself, even very slightly, through forces other than gravity. Dark matter has never before been observed interacting in any way other than through the force of gravity.

Lead author Richard Massey at Durham University, explains:

We used to think that dark matter just sits around, minding its own business, except for its gravitational pull. But if dark matter were being slowed down during this collision, it could be the first evidence for rich physics in the dark sector — the hidden Universe all around us.

Extremely Rare Quadruple Rainbow Captured Over New York

Yesterday, a woman in Long Island, NY named Amanda Curtis was lucky enough to capture the rarest rainbow of them all – a quadruple rainbow. Her incredibly rare photo, and the excitement it inspired among commenters when it went viral, called to mind the viral ‘Double Rainbow’ video by Paul Vasquez.

According to meteorologists, what Curtis actually saw was a double-double rainbow, but that doesn’t make it any less magical. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) research meteorologist Paul Neiman told the Washington Post that the second double rainbow resulted from the sun’s light reflecting off of a nearby body of water; “a large glassy-smooth water surface is required behind the observer. This smooth water surface reflects the sun, such that a second solar light source is generated. This reflected sun […] creates a second primary and secondary rainbow on the opposite side of the sky from the sun.”

When Will We Run Out Of Names?

Are we close to running out of names? And what are the odds of you sharing your name with a famous person?

We seem to run into this problem all the time, such as when we try to make a social media account just under our name and the username is taken, or when we search our friends account and have to look through a list of people with the same names.

All this and more is discussed in Vsauce’s most recent video.

Read This Incredible Story Of Why You Can't Buy Grape Ice Cream

Quite a few people out there are wondering why they can’t buy grape ice cream. There’s actually a legitimate story as to why you can’t find it anywhere and this is it.

The successful inventor of ice cream soda, the brilliant Robert Green promised his fans that he would create a grape flavored ice cream in time for the 1876 World Fair. However, Green was unaware that grapes contain the molecule Anthocyanin, which prevents freezing. He failed miserably.

Other companies such as Baskin Robbins tried it, and failed because of the anthocyanin. No breakthroughs were made until 1976, when Ben from Ben and Jerry decided to give it a go, motivated by a challenge from Jerry’s attractive sister Becky.

In an interview with People Magazine in 1984 Ben recounted that he had the biggest crush on Becky and promised to create a flavor of Ice cream just for her. Knowing the history of grape ice cream, she coyly requested a grape flavor thinking it impossible.

He began including the grapes’ skins along with the juice to better see the differences between his batches. Though he didn’t understand the science behind his actions at the time, Ben found that including the skins increased the Anthocyanin concentration level enough for it to make the ice cream freeze. Success!

Becky was impressed. We were at her house, alone. I gave her the scoop – on a cone. I was really getting somewhere. She was laughing and happy. She couldn’t believe I did it. I’ll never forget what happened next.

Becky jokingly gave her dog a lick from the cone. He liked it and took a couple licks. Then he just gasped and dropped dead. He flipped down onto the floor and was just gone. I had no idea that Grapes are toxic to dogs. Specifically the Anthoycyanin. Becky was devastated. I had invented deadly dog poison, and I definitely wasn’t getting anywhere with her now. This grape thing was no good. You can’t have dog poison this toxic in the house. My creation was dead.

Ben gave this information to the pharmaceutical industry, and in 1982 the FDA banned the sale or research of any grape flavored ice creams or sherbets, natural or artificial due to pet related hazards. This ban is in effect until 2028.

Weird, Ugly, Peculiar: 7 Mobile Phones That Will Make You Go "What!!"

What would we do without our mobile phones? Americans today check their mobile devices an average of 180 times per day. It’s the favorite technology among teenagers, too; twice as many kids aged 12-17 would rather give up their TV than their mobile device. Maybe it’s because today’s phones are slim, functional, and stylish. What if they weren’t? Check out these seven weird, ugly, and utterly peculiar mobile devices that took a wrong turn on the technology evolution tree.

The Fujitsu Chamelephone

If you are like most people, misplacing your mobile phone is a common occurrence. So, of course, the geniuses at Fujitsu came up with the Chamelephone, a device made with a unique LSD display that adjusts to the surface it’s placed on. Set it on a wood table, it takes on a wood-grained surface; lay it on the grass, it looks like a hunk of turf. To go from ugly to weird, designer Hiroyuki Tabuchi gave the phone an almost cube-like shape, because, of course, no one would ever want to put their phone in a pocket or something, right?

The Nokia Green “Soda” Phone

This prototype is one of the strangest phones ever invented. The idea behind the “soda” phone was eliminating the need for expensive and environmentally harmful cell phone batteries that require an electrical charge to work. The designers at Finnish Nokia came up with a mobile phone shaped like a test tube containing a bio-battery which uses enzymes to make electricity from carbs, specifically sugar. Instead of plugging in your phone, just unscrew its cap, pour in a sip of soda, and voila! Your phone is charged and ready to go. On the downside, you look like a mad scientist every time you make a call.

The Bang & Olufsen Serene Phone

The engineers at this Dutch company should stick to headphones and sound systems, and leave the mobile phones to the pros. Introduced in 2007 with a $1,500 price tag, the Serene phone was an oddly shaped flip-phone that resembled nothing so much as a makeup compact designed for Lieutenant Uhura on Star Trek. Luckily when purchased through a trustworthy carrier, the price tag on today’s smartphones, like the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge, is a lot more manageable.

The Golden Buddha Phone

When you combine religion, vulgar displays of wealth, and cell phone technology, the result is shockingly similar to a 24-karat gold-encrusted contraceptives case. The golden Buddha cell phone hit the Chinese market several years ago and features a clamshell design, LCD screen, nifty camera, a hunk of jade, and some pearl powder lacquer — features certainly worth the $1,750 price tag.

The F88 Wrist Phone

China Electronic Corporation launched its version of a smart watch, the F88, in 2003 to underwhelming international acclaim. The watch was about the same size as an average walkie-talkie, but unfortunately, not as attractive. Unless you’re impersonating Dick Tracy at a costume party, there probably isn’t any other place this watch is appropriate.

The Virgin Lobster Phone

Image via Flickr by James Cridland

Virgin launched the Lobster phone in 2006 with what they considered a cutting edge advantage for their new “tellyphone:” A TV on your mobile device. They decided to create the first device aimed at the youth market, a fun phone for kids and not boring old business executives. Unfortunately, the phone looked more like an electric razor that a cell phone and weighed about as much as a small brick.

Toshiba G450

The Toshiba G450 phone is the perfect device for those who consider a TV remote an attractive fashion accessory. Measuring about seven inches long and featuring three rounded sections, one for an LED screen, and the other two for number keypads, the device actually got decent reviews by the tech geeks at Pocket Lint — but then again, they are tech geeks and not fashion consultants.

Fortunately, today’s consumers have a wide range of mobile devices to choose from that are sleek, attractive, and feature rich. For example, the Galaxy Note Edge features leading edge design and a revolutionary curved screen that appeals to tech geeks and fashionistas alike, which is a welcome change from the clunkers on this list.

Women's Makeup Throughout History

Civilizations have used forms of cosmetics — though not always recognizable to cosmetics users today — for centuries in religious rituals, to enhance beauty, and to promote good health. Cosmetic usage throughout history can be indicative of a civilization’s practical concerns, such as protection from the sun; class system; or of its conventions of beauty. The timeline below represents a brief history of cosmetics usage, beginning with the Ancient Egyptians in 10,000 BCE up through the beginning of the 20th Century. Mineral is a “naturally occurring substance that is solid and inorganic representable by a chemical formula, and has an ordered atomic structure.” Rocks, unlike minerals, don’t have a specific chemical composition, and can be made of both minerals or non-minerals. Although there are over 4,900 known types of minerals, the ones here are just the most beautiful ones that we and our readers could find.

According to Saeed, he got out of his jeep to take a few photos of the lion but the lens’ sound attracted his attention. “I was thinking – I must show the character and status of lion and this was the only way I could think of to achieve this,” Saeed told the Dailymail. The lion approached to as few as 10 feet before it jumped at the photographer and he scrambled back into his jeep.

I was sitting in front of him just near my car and the door of my car was open. I was sat on ground few feet away, so he was treating me like his prey… I was laughing at that time, but now when I think back about the incident I don’t think I would be able to do it again. It was a pretty close encounter.

See What Causes Bad Breath And How to Prevent It

Halitosis is a curse that has plagued humanity since ancient times. To conquer bad breath, the ancient Greeks reputedly used home remedies like rinsing with white wine, anise seed, and myrrh, while the Italians mixed up a mouthwash of sage, cinnamon, juniper seeds, root of cypress, and rosemary leaves.

But what causes it, and why is it so universally terrifying?

The Mystery of the Barreleye Fish

In the Pacific Ocean, there lives a fish that’s… a little different.

The Pacific barreleye fish is one the weirdest creatures lurking deep in the ocean. Named after its eyes that are literally shaped like barrels, the species’ most unique trait is the completely transparent head. Although known to scientists since 1939,  it was photographed alive only in 2004.

10 Amazing Fire Tricks

These are relatively simple tricks that you can perform at home with basics supplies.

All of these tricks can be dangerous so please use extreme caution when performing these experiments. Use safety glasses, gloves, well ventilated areas and adult supervision.

Be careful and have fun!

Tricks in the video:

1. Traveling Flame

This is a simple yet amazing trick. Some candles contain a chemical called paraffin. Paraffin is petroleum by-product. When you relight the smoke, you’re actually lighting the paraffin residue within the smoke. The closer you get the lighter to the candle, the easier it is to relight. It’s fun to see just how high you can relight the candle. The version in the video shows the candle being relighted about 6 to 7 inches away.

2. Rising water

When the glass is placed over the candle, the flame burns up the oxygen, forming a vacuum. The vacuum sucks the water from the plate into the glass. Other versions of this trick ask for the candle to be attached to the plate but I thought it was cool to see the candle float up.

3. Crayon candle

Very simple and fun to do. Hold a flame to the crayon for 15 or 20 seconds and it will light and stay burning for 5 to 10 minutes.

4. Burning ping pong balls

Ping pong balls are highly flammable. They are made of celluloid. I was shocked the first time I lit one. It literally bursts into flames. The fumes can be highly toxic so if you perform this trick, do it outside and don’t breathe in the fumes.

5. Candle seesaw

This is such a fun trick to try. Drill a hole through the middle of a long candle. Be careful not to split the candle. That’s why I used a drill with a small bit. Then carefully put a nail through the hole. Balance the candle between 2 glasses and light both ends. Even if the candle starts from a complete standstill, it will eventually start rocking dramatically. As the candle burns it melts the wax and the wax drips off, causing the candle to lose weight. When one end goes down, the flame burns more wax off than the other end. So the bottom end loses weight rapidly, causing the top end to become heavier. It rotates down and the process continues.. If you position the nail perfectly through the center, you can get the candle to flip almost 360 degrees.

6. Fire in a bottle

Pour about 1 inch of rubbing alcohol in a long narrow bottle. Shake it up to coat the entire inside, open the lid and light the top. It will light quickly, shooting a flame down into the bottle while making a loud whistling sound.

7. Singing pipe

I ordered this pipe from a science based website. You can find it by doing a search for “singing pipe”. You heat the mesh screen in the bottom of the pipe then hold the pipe upright. The mesh screen is so hot that it gives off a large amount of heat. When the heat rises up the pipe, it creates a flow of air that causes the pipe to resonate, thereby creating a tone. When you tilt the pipe sideways, the flow of air is disrupted, which eliminates to the tone. When you hold the pipe upright again, the tone will return.

8. Black snake

Use, 4 parts powdered sugar to 1 part baking soda. Stir and then add a decent amount of rubbing alcohol. All you have to do is light it and watch the magic begin.

9. Fire tornado

This is an oldie but a goodie. When the mesh trash can spins, it creates a mini vortex around the flame, which causes the flame to spin. Most versions of this trick are done using a lazy susan, so you have to spin it manually. I thought it would be interesting to try it on a turntable. It works much better with the turntable.

10. Steel wool fire

Steel wool contains iron. Simple light the steel wool and watch the magic begin. Be careful when handling steel wool. Use gloves and safety glasses.

Be careful and have fun!
