Benefits-Of-Meditation1

Meditation and its effect on brain activity and the central nervous system became a focus of collaborative research in neuroscience, psychology and neurobiology during the latter 20th century.

Dan Harris explains the neuroscience behind meditation, but reminds us that the ancient practice isn’t magic and likely won’t send one floating into the cosmic ooze. He predicts that the exercise will soon become regularly scheduled maintenance, as commonplace as brushing your teeth or eating your veggies. Harris, an ABC News correspondent, was turned on to mediation after a live, on-air panic attack.

The Macabre Sculptures Within The Bone Church

If you happen to venture into the Czech Republic’s small suburb of Sedlec, you may stumble upon the Cemetery Church of All Saints. The structure itself looks fairly unassuming, but the outer walls contain some creepy indications of the ghastly findings you are about to encounter inside.

SEE ALSO: Poland’s creepy Skull Chapel

Receiving over 200,000 tourists a year, the Sedlec Ossuary is one of the Czech Republic’s most popular tourist attractions, reminding us of our obsession with the morbid and macabre.

Tucked beneath the small Roman Catholic chapel is the Sedlec Ossuary, which is an enormous mausoleum estimated to hold the remains of between 40,000 and 70,000 dead people. The vast majority of the deceased met their demise in the 14th and 15th centuries after obviously unsuccessful encounters with the black plague and the Hussite wars.

Around the year 1511, a half-blind monk was given the monumental task of stacking the bones within the chapel to conserve space. By 1870, the bones were being artistically arranged by a Czech woodcarver named Frantisek Rint.

Many places around the world purport being haunted by one sort of spirit or another, but there are few that would have as much cause for supernatural activity as the Sedlec Ossuary does. That being said, the place is not often associated with or generally thought of as being haunted. Thankfully, it seems like the residents of this particular crypt are truly resting in peace.

Photos From The Legendary 1969 Woodstock Rock Festival

Forty-five years ago, the mother of all rock festivals took place. Billed as “An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music”, over 400 thousand young people flocked to Bethel, New York to take part in what would become the zenith of 1960s counterculture.

Initially expecting only 100,000 people, Woodstock swelled to over 400,000 revelers. Concert organizers realized that they had neither the means or resources to prevent the flood of people and thus made the concert ‘free’ by cutting all the fences surrounding the festival area.

On and off again rain became a staple of the Woodstock weekend, though that didn’t stop the energy or proceedings of the festival.

Today, we take a look back at the highlight of the summer of love with these amazing Woodstock photos.

These Aweosme Pictures Are Not Photoshopped And Will Break Your Brain

Georges Rousse is a Paris-based artist and photographer that transforms deserted buildings into incredible optical illusions. He is the master of an art form called Single-Perspective Installations.

He arranges materials and paints that blend with the architecture, and then documents and presents the work through photography. Viewers are instantly challenged to understand how the shapes, colors, and architecture fit together. Beluga Whale Plays Peek A Boo With Kids At Aquarium

A trip to the aquarium is usually a chance for children to watch sea animals go about their own business, oblivious to outside observers. In this video, a beluga whale turns the tables as it.

Michelle Cotton filmed the animated sea creature called Juno pulling funny faces through the window of his tank during a visit to the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut. As he smashes his head against the glass and snap its jaws fiercely open joke, son of Mrs. Cotton and a friend heard screams of joy.

Juno seems perfected their stage performance and knows the exact movements that make his audience shudder. As he playfully throws it back and forth, your viewers jump in shock. Finally it rises to the surface of the water to the air and nothing out. According to the website of the aquarium, Juno loves to see visitors in the underwater viewing area.

The aquarium says 12-year-old Juno was not showing aggression and was just playing around. The whale was transferred to Mystic Aquarium on breeding loan to SeaWorld Orlando in January 2010. He measures is 11 feet, nine inches long and weighs 1320 pounds.

Mystic is home to one of the largest exhibitions of outdoor beluga whales in the USA. The animals are native to the Arctic Ocean and its adjacent seas. They eat a varied diet including salmon, shrimp, mussels, octopus, crabs and sandworms.

“Smell No Taste” Village In Liberia With A Terrible Origins Of The Name

“Smell No Taste” is the name of a famous Liberian village located between Roberts Intl. Airport and the infamous Firestone plantation.

The village got its name in WWII, when an American air force base filled the location with it’s wafting fragrances of cooking food which the locals could, literally, smell but never taste.

SEE ALSO: Historical photos showing life in russian village 1910

Firestone Tire and Rubber Plantation’s history is painfully enlaced with Liberia’s.

In 1920s, the Liberian government was on the verge of bankruptcy and under severe pressure from international creditors for repaying a US$ 2 million debt. Along came Firestone. It bargained with the government for a lease of one million acres of land for one hundred years.

smell_no_taste

In 1926, the Liberian government granted Firestone a 99-year lease for a million acres (to be chosen by the company wherever in Liberia) at a price of 6 cents per acre, Firestone thus created the world’s largest rubber plantation. Firestone also provided a $5 million loan at a 7% interest rate to the government to pay the foreign debts it had and to build a harbour needed by Firestone.

The loan took a larger and larger portion of the Liberian government’s incomes: it grew from 20% of the total revenue of Liberia in 1929, to 32% in 1930, to 54.9% in 1931 and nearly the whole revenue in 1932.

During the Great Depression, as rubber price fell, Firestone stopped its development of the plantation and, depriving the Liberian government of tax incomes, the government missed a payment to the loans to the company. Firestone asked the US government to send a warship to Monrovia to enforce the debt payment, but President Franklin Delano Roosevelt rejected the “gunboat diplomacy”. The loans to the company were finally paid in 1952.

The next part of the story is slightly blurred and may well be apocryphal although it is often repeated in the area.  Close to Smell no Taste is another village which used to be named locally as “F*** no Pay”.  It’s easy to guess why… Same soldiers often ventured to this village in order to satisfy their manly natural instincts with the local lasses, promising to pay the young ladies for their services when the next pay day came around.  Allegedly they frequently failed to honour their debts so the village name stuck!

Prior to a visit to the area in the 1980’s by the then Liberian President and his wife it was decided, as a matter of decency, to change the names of the two villages so they became known together as “Unification Town”.

Whilst the modern official name for the town remains as “Unification Town” and “F*** no Pay” has long since disappeared, ‘Smell no Taste’ is still the preferred name used by the locals who live in the area today.

This stories will not let you forget that they are terrible places on earth. Some can be even recognize by the names…

Rosa Khutor, which was one of the main hubs of the 2014 Sochi Olympics, is “completely empty” six months after the games, according Russian photographer Alexander Belenkiy.

Belenkiy called the town “lifeless” in a post on his Live Journal blog. He said the shops, restaurants, and hotels were operating at 5% capacity and that he encountered only a handful of tourists on the streets.

The Sochi Olympics cost $51 billion. A good chunk of that went toward building the mountain cluster. The Russian government spent $8.7 billion on a 31-mile road and railway system to connect Krasnaya Polyana to the coastal neighborhood of Adler. Another $2 billion was spentto build the Rosa Khutor ski resort.

Alien From the Ocean

If you’ve ever seen the movie “Alien” then this small guy should look pretty familiar.

Probably it is the deep sea dragonfish, ferocious predator that lives in deep ocean waters at depths of up to 5,000 feet (1,500 meters). In spite of its gruesome appearance, its is a small fish, measuring only about 6 inches (about 15 centimeters) in length. There are several different species of dragonfish. Because they live in extremely deep waters, very little is known about the habits.

7 Talks To Make You Love Science

Science is about discovering the wonders of how our world works.

From physics to biology to neuroscience, here are seven talks to make you love science.

1. Suicidal crickets, zombie roaches and other parasite tales

We humans set a premium on our own free will and independence … and yet there’s a shadowy influence we might not be considering. As science writer Ed Yong explains in this fascinating, hilarious and disturbing talk, parasites have perfected the art of manipulation to an incredible degree. So are they influencing us? It’s more than likely.

2. What is so special about the human brain?

The human brain is puzzling — it is curiously large given the size of our bodies, uses a tremendous amount of energy for its weight and has a bizarrely dense cerebral cortex. But: why? Neuroscientist Suzana Herculano-Houzel puts on her detective’s cap and leads us through this mystery. By making “brain soup,” she arrives at a startling conclusion.

3. The weird, wonderful world of bioluminescence

In the deep, dark ocean, many sea creatures make their own light for hunting, mating and self-defense. Bioluminescence expert Edith Widder was one of the first to film this glimmering world. At TED2011, she brings some of her glowing friends onstage, and shows more astonishing footage of glowing undersea life.

4. Psychedelic science

Swiss artist and photographer Fabian Oefner is on a mission to make eye-catching art from everyday science. In this charming talk, he shows off some recent psychedelic images, including photographs of crystals as they interact with soundwaves. And, in a live demo, he shows what really happens when you mix paint with magnetic liquid—or when you set fire to whiskey.

5. The birds and the bees are just the beginning

Think you know a thing or two about sex? Think again. In this fascinating talk, biologist Carin Bondar lays out the surprising science behind how animals get it on. (This talk describes explicit and aggressive sexual content.)

6. Is our universe the only universe?

Is there more than one universe? In this visually rich, action-packed talk, Brian Greene shows how the unanswered questions of physics (starting with a big one: What caused the Big Bang?) have led to the theory that our own universe is just one of many in the “multiverse.”

7. Swim with the giant sunfish

Marine biologist Tierney Thys asks us to step into the water to visit the world of the Mola mola, or giant ocean sunfish. Basking, eating jellyfish and getting massages, this behemoth offers clues to life in the open sea.

Inside The Ebola Isoloation Ward

Western Africa is experiencing the largest Ebola outbreak that humanity has ever experienced! The Ebola death toll in West Africa reached 1,145 Friday, and things are getting downright scary. The current outbreak is the deadliest since Ebola was discovered in 1976.

Ebola is a viral illness of which the initial symptoms can include a sudden fever, intense weakness, muscle pain and a sore throat, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). And that is just the beginning: subsequent stages are vomiting, diarrhoea and – in some cases – both internal and external bleeding.

According to BBC, disease infects humans through close contact with infected animals and then spreads between humans by direct contact with infected blood and bodily fluids, or indirectly through contact with contaminated environments.

Rebranding can be a risky business because current brand already has recognition and market share. But as you can see on these examples, rebranding can bring more profits than losses. If done wisely.

Learn Poker from the Masters

Winning poker players, regardless of their skill level, are always looking to improve.  Good players spend a great deal of time discussing the game, reading books, railing games and analysing the plays of the Daniels, Guses, Phils and Doyles of the world.  While these are excellent ways to improve their game, perhaps they would be better served by studying the strategies and tactics of William, Fredrick, Genghis and Napoleon.

That is the theory behind an infographic prepared by the Full Tilt Team. Poker is as much about playing your opponents as it is about your cards; those who join a table armed only with some chips, a starting hand guide and knowledge of the rules will soon find the game difficult to win.  While it is doubtful that any of the strategists mentioned ever played a hand of poker, their advice and tactics on the battlefield translate easily to the poker table.

Frederick the Great – The Prussian was outnumbered and surrounded, yet still managed to win battles. His secret was to concentrate his forces on just a few targets at a time and accumulate victories. Frederick’s philosophy of “He who defends everything, defends nothing” is the perfect mantra for the tight aggressive players.  All hands are not created equally and your chips are your soldiers. Only send them into battle with hands with the best chance of victory.  When you attack  your opponents, put them to a test every time.

Attila the Hun –  One of the early lessons poker players learn is that stealing the blinds and pots, though often small amounts, add up and aid in playing the big pots later on.  Attila was ruthless, plundering those he conquered. He also demanded tribute afterwards which further drained the resources of his foes and hindered their ability to challenge him.  Attila’s strategy was basically the same as a poker player in the cut-off seat or on the button; the Hun applied pressure every time he had an advantage. So should you.

William the Conqueror – William is perhaps the most famous check-raiser in history. During the Battle of Hastings he feigned a retreat to draw King Harold’s troops into a vulnerable position and then attacked. In poker, the check-raise puts a great deal of pressure on your opponents, indicating strength and frequently resulting in players abandoning the pot.  Once it has been employed, the check-raise becomes an even more valuable weapon; no longer do your opponents feel entirely comfortable betting when you check to them.  It also sets up the opportunity for a check-raise bluff.

Arminius – The Germanic tribesman conquered his Roman opponents by creating false uprisings which led his enemies into ambushes.  This early example of slow playing is an important concept to remember.  Often you will see players fire off huge bets when they hold the nuts, but it is usually more profitable to let their opponent lead the action. Check raising with the nuts will usually cost you bets on future streets. As Napoleon said centuries after Arminius, “Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.”

Genghis Khan – The Mongol warrior actually commanded a relatively small force. He succeeded by picking his battles very carefully, and preservation of his troops was a priority.  Adapting the same strategy in sit and go tournaments is very worthwhile.  You can’t win the tournament in the early rounds, but you can lose it. Don’t sacrifice your chips (troops) when your edge is very thin or a coin flip. Your goal is to make the money and then to win the tournament.

She Is Said To Be Female Banksy. Who Exactly Is Bambi?

Bambi is a mystery female street artist, dubbed “the female Banksy” by the British press. She has been active around London for the past 5 years. Her portraits of pop culture figures have made her a star in the art world but, much like Banksy, there is a mystery regarding her true identity.

SEE ALSO: Has Banksy finally been revealed?

Supposedly she attended St. Martin’s Art College and when not painting is actually a pop star. True identities suggested for Bambi include M.I.A., Paloma Faith, Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice), and even Adele. With a meteoric rise in the art world and patrons including Rihanna, Angelina Jolie, and Brad Pitt, having a celebrity alter ego makes sense for Bambi.

Check out more from Bambi at Walton Fine Arts and let us know who you think she is or if her true identity even matters.

Sarah Schönfeld, an artist based in Berlin, decided to drop bits of liquid drugs onto negative film that had been previously exposed. The drugs reacted with the coating on the film and the result was then enlarged.

“All of the substances behaved very differently,” Schönfeld described on her website. “The shapes and colors that appeared showed unique characteristics and revealed unique internal universes.”

Does Federer have one more in him?

Roger Federer is hard to describe. That’s because there are no amount of hyperboles that can properly explain the talent of this tennis phenomenon. The Swiss star has won an incredible 17 Grand Slam tournaments as well as a Silver Medal at London 2012.

This summer Federer came within a set off becoming Wimbledon champion for an eighth time. The 33-year-old managed to come back from 5-2 down to take the fourth set but he ran into a carnivorous Novak Djokovic in the final set and was duly despatched. So can we see Federer win another Grand Slam?

As to be expected with older players the window of opportunity shortens with every passing day. Players over the age of 30 rarely challenge for silverware. In fact the last person to win a Grand Slam that was over the age of 30-years-old was Andre Agassi, who at the age of 32-years-old won the Australian Open back in 2003. Especially in the modern era, age is a huge factor. In just the past ten years the physicality and demands of the game have increased considerably, as a result, younger and fitter people naturally have an advantage. If one was to use age as a barometer to determine Federer’s title hopes, you would have to say no.

However, this is Roger Federer, and if anyone is going to defy the odds, leaving others stupefied, then there can only be one man, Federer. In the tennis betting the Swiss is fourth favourite for the upcoming US Open, a tournament that he could more than likely win. Federer was poor at Flushing Meadows last year, failing to pass the fourth round, and will be hoping to put things right this season.

Federer had a bad 2013, like really bad, managing to reach the semi finals of just the Australian Open. The prognosis on Federer’s playing career looked bleak – too many easy defeats to too many lowly ranked players – but he brought in Stefan Edberg as his new coach and he seems to have been immediately rewarded. Another semi-final exit at the Australian and a fourth round exit at the French Open were good but Federer’s runners-up performance at Wimbledon was the clearest sign that he can still challenge for titles – just one set was dropped by the 33-year-old on his course to the Wimbledon final.

His body may not be at the peak of his powers but that is not to say that Federer is no longer formidable. He may lack in power but mental strength, technique, skill, tennis knowledge all remain at their best.

It isn’t going to be easy for Federer but if Lady Luck does decide to give him a hand, much like with Andy Murray’s easy route to the Wimbledon final of 2013, and players like Rafa Nadal and Djokovic get eliminated early then Federer has a wonderful opportunity.

10 Ways To Get Rich According to Warren Buffett

When it comes to financial advice there is no one more esteemed and educated than Warren Buffett. With an estimated fortune of $62 billion, he’s the richest man in the entire world. And he’s also a really nice guy, pledging to give away 99% of his wealth to philanthropic causes.

One question he repeatedly gets asked is ‘How Can I Get Rich?’. Here are some of Warren Buffett’s money-making secrets – and how they could work for you.

“Rule No. 1 : Never lose money.

Rule No.2: Never forget Rule No.1″

1. Reinvest Your Profits

“Someone’s sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.”

When you first start a business or trade stocks and make a profit, its tempting to spend it. Don’t. Reinvest that money in the stock or back into your business. This will increase your portfolio and help your business grow as your profits grow.

In high school, he and a pal bought a pinball machine to put in a barbershop. With the money they earned, they bought more machines until they had eight in different shops. When the friends sold the venture, Warren Buffett used the proceeds to buy stocks and to start another small business. By age 26, he’d amassed $174,000 — or $1.4 million in today’s money. Even a small sum can turn into great wealth.

2. Be Different

Be willing to go against what everyone else says and thinks you should do. If you pursue the average, your returns will be just that, average. Judge yourself by your own standards and not by everyone else’s.

When Warren Buffett began managing money in 1956 with $100,000 cobbled together from a handful of investors, he was dubbed an oddball. He worked in Omaha, not Wall Street, and he refused to tell his parents where he was putting their money. People predicted that he’d fail, but when he closed his partnership 14 years later, it was worth more than $100 million. Instead of following the crowd, he looked for undervalued investments and ended up vastly beating the market average every single year.

3. Don’t Procrastinate

Be ready to gather all the required information before making a decision and go for it. Don’t hesitate and procrastinate. Dedicate yourself to your goal and stick to your decision after its made. Tell your family and trusted friends about them so they can help you stick to them.

quote-Warren-Buffett-it-takes-20-years-to-build-a-1120

4. Negotiate Before You Enter An Agreement

Your leverage is much higher before you enter into an arrangement. This is when you have something that the other party wants. Always nail down the specifics of a deal before a deal is done, even with family and friends.

Warren Buffett learned this lesson the hard way as a kid, when his grandfather Ernest hired him and a friend to dig out the family grocery store after a blizzard. The boys spent five hours shoveling until they could barely straighten their frozen hands. Afterward, his grandfather gave the pair less than 90 cents to split. Warren Buffett was horrified that he performed such backbreaking work only to earn pennies an hour.

5. Take Care Of The Small Expenses

Known as a frugal man, despite his vast wealth, Buffett looks for managers who also obsess over the smaller expenses. Exercising vigilance over every expense can make your profits and your paycheck go much further.

6. Limit Your Borrowing

“I’ve seen more people fail because of liquor and leverage – leverage being borrowed money. You really don’t need leverage in this world much. If you’re smart, you’re going to make a lot of money without borrowing.”

Living on credit cards and debt won’t make you rich. Borrow as little as possible, and where you can, start a business with as little capital as possible. If you have debt, negotiate with the creditors and pay back what you can, and when you’re debt free, save money that you can invest

7. Be Persistent

By being the most motivated and persistent, you can beat any competitor. Tenacity and persistence are Buffetts most valued attributes in a business owner. To have the courage to work harder and longer than anyone else is willing to will make you richer, period.

1920-warren-buffett-quotes-wallpaper-1

8. Know When To Quit

Know when to walk away from a loss, and don’t let anxiety fool you into trying again. Gamblers have a habit of trying to recoup their losses by gambling some more, and before they know if, they’ve lost a months earnings.

When Warren Buffett was a teen, he went to the racetrack. He bet on a race and lost. To recoup his funds, he bet on another race. He lost again, leaving him with close to nothing. He felt sick – he had squandered nearly a week’s earnings.

9. Get Good At Assessing Risk

“Risk comes from not knowing what you’re doing.”

When you’re struggling to make a decision, put yourself through all the worst and best case scenarios possible. Then ask yourself ‘Am I willing to take that risk?’ and if you’re not, get out. Getting good at knowing which risks to take and which to pass up will make the biggest difference for you. Know when to walk away from a loss, and don’t let anxiety fool you into trying again.

10. Understand What Success Really Means

Warrent Buffett understands what real success is. Its not measured by the amount of dollars in your bank account, because if it was he wouldn’t have given almost all of his wealth away. He says ‘When you get to my age, you’ll measure your success in life by how many of the people you want to have love you, actually do love you. That’s the ultimate test of how you’ve lived your life.’ True success is impacting peoples lives and living your life to your full potential. Then you can say that you did your best.

People Who Died After Taking A Selfie

Selfie was coined in 2005 as a way to describe a special kind of self-portrait. From presidents to Academy Award winners, everybody’s doing it. It’s a part of our modern culture that we all engage in without any real thought. Most of the time, we do it so we can post them onto social media and show everyone what we look like at our best, and how we spend our time. How awesome we are…

SEE ALSO: There is never the wrong time for a selfie. Or is it?

The study from three business schools in Europe confirms that selfies are the worst. In a paper hilariously titled “Tagger’s Delight? Disclosure and liking behaviour in Facebook: the effects of sharing photographs amongst multiple known social circles” four professors claim that people who post more selfies have shallow relationships with people. You know, real, live people. With heartbeats! Increased frequency of sharing photographs of the self, regardless of the type of target sharing the photographs, is related to a decrease in intimacy,” explains the report. [via]

Besides of being evidence of narcissism, selfie can also be deadly. People staring at their smartphones’ screens forget about God’s world. And this is the simplest way to misadventure.

Here are people who died after taking selfie.

How Do You Know You Exist?

“I Think, Therefore I am”

Rene Descartes is the man credited to these few words.  The simple meaning of the phrase is that thinking about one’s existence proves—in and of itself—that an “I” exists to do the thinking; or, as Descartes explains, “We cannot doubt of our existence while we doubt … .”

Yeah, that is so… philosophical. But how do you know you’re real? Is existence all just a big dream? Has some mad scientist duped us into simply believing that we exist?

James Zucker investigates all of these questions (and more) in this mind-boggling tribute to René Descartes’s “Meditations on First Philosophy.”

Things to think about next time you spin the reels

While not everyone knows how to play casino games like roulette or blackjack, there is one type of casino game that is so easy that anyone could play it. And they do, in their millions. Slots have always been the most popular games in land-based casinos and now that there are so many online casinos, slots have retained that number one position for many players.

The appeal of playing slots is obvious. Not only is it a simple game, but there’s also the fact that every time you play, you have the possibility of winning a huge amount of money, particularly if you pick a progressive jackpot game. If you’ve never played slots, you can start playing within a couple of minutes anywhere you have an online connection. All you need to do is choose a casino site to join and register on the site. Most sites will let people play for free in demo mode so that they can try out the games before they decide whether to put any real money down. Check out the selection of slots at http://www.32red.com/games/online-slots.html to see the range of games available. Of course, 32red is just one of many sites that offers its players hundreds of slots to choose from, there are plenty of other similar sites like Gala Casino and SkyVegas to try too.

For anyone who enjoys playing slots, you’ll know they don’t require much mental effort to play. So when you’re next playing, let you mind wander over these fascinating facts about one of the world’s simplest, but also most entertaining, games.

Big wins

Back in the old days, penny slots gave out penny prizes, but today it’s possible to win millions on a slot machine. Last year, a Scottish fisherman swapped his fishing reels for the reels on a slot machine and won an incredible £5.4 million while playing online with a stake of just 20 pence. The anonymous winner was playing Hall of Gods at BetVictor casino. He’s obviously got a strong work ethic though, because even though he’ll never need to work again, he plans to continue working as a fisherman.

That’s not the only mega-win that has come from a slot machine. Back in 2003, the biggest slot win ever took place when a young software engineer from Los Angeles won almost $40 million when playing with a $100 stake on a Megabucks machine in Vegas at the Excalibur Hotel. This record-breaking win has yet to be broken on a slots machine.

Slots nicknames

Although most people call them slot machines, there are other nicknames for these perennially popular games. In Australia, slots are known as ‘pokies’ – the reason behind this is that when the slot machine was originally invented it was devised on the basis of creating a game similar to poker that could be played by a single person. In Japan, meanwhile, slots are called ‘pachisuro’. Slots are relatively new to Japan and their name pays homage to a traditional Japanese game called ‘pachinko’. Americans often still refer to slots as ‘one-armed bandits’. This name came about because the original slot machine – the Liberty Bell – was set in motion by pulling a handle down on the side. The early machines were nicknamed one-armed bandits as it was believed that you were robbed every time you pulled the lever! In the early days of slots, UK laws prevented the adoption of pure slot machines so a variant was devised which featured picture strips of symbols that included fruit – hence they became known as ‘fruit machines’ and the name has stuck even though fruit machines are now a nod to the past.

A win is down to luck

There are lots of people who’ll swear that different systems will help you win playing slots. Many players won’t play on a physical slot machine if there’s just been a big win on it, thinking that it won’t be ‘due’ another pay out for a while. However, every spin is independent of the one before, which means that a pay out could come at any time. The same goes for online slots, which are controlled by random number generator software. There’s no reason to think that when you play will affect your chances of winning.

The fact that player input has nothing to do with the chances of winning doesn’t stop people having superstitions when playing slots. Some players keep a lucky charm or mascot to hand when they play, others have rituals that they follow to increase their luck when playing at a physical slot – like only playing when they’re standing up, or only feeding warm coins rather than cold ones into the machine. It’s all nonsense, of course, but if it makes them feel luckier, then why not?
