The idea of an atom began with the Greek philosopher Democritus, who proclaimed all matter consisted of tiny particles. Civilian nuclear power plants came on line in the mid-1950s before most of us were born. Nuclear energy is one of the most efficient forms of energy, but it is also very dangerous.
